I am really excited about one of the\u00a0recent changes Twitter made to direct messaging aka the DM. I can finally send one individual message instead of sending my friends four different messages to tell them about a birthday get together! Get the scoop\u00a0on this change and more below.<\/p>\n<h2>Twitter Direct Messaging Goes from 140 to 10,000<\/h2>\n<p>Prior to the change, DMs had a 140 character count limit, just like tweets. This limitation was always an issue for brands that wanted to reach out to their customers via Twitter for customer service purposes. It was also an issue for people like me who have a lot to say and felt confined by only 140 characters. If this is you as well, I have great news, Twitter has announced that they are removing the 140-character limit from direct messages. This was<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/official\/en_us\/a\/2015\/removing-the-140-character-limit-from-direct-messages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Twitter\u2019s statement<\/a> about their character change.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhile Twitter is largely a public experience, Direct Messages let you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements, and events that unfold on Twitter. Each of the hundreds of millions of Tweets sent across Twitter every day is an opportunity for you to spark a conversation about what\u2019s happening in your world. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve made a number of changes to Direct Messages over the last few months. Today\u2019s change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new character limit is now 10,000 characters which I am sure will be more than enough for you to relay your message. If it isn\u2019t, then you\u00a0have a bigger issue!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Benefits of This Change<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u00a0won\u2019t have to be as concise in direct\u00a0messages to try to get across what\u00a0you\u00a0have to say.<\/li>\n<li>No more abbreviating words that can be misunderstood.<\/li>\n<li>Twitter users can now have an ongoing conversation and not be limited to how much they want to say.<\/li>\n<li>Brands can now bring their highest quality of customer service to their clients on Twitter, by having unlimited details in their DMs. <em>This is an example of what can make your brand stand out from the rest in your industry.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Longer spam messages is the only con I can see so far from this Twitter change. This isn\u2019t necessarily a horrible thing, because let\u2019s face it, spam is everywhere and it\u2019s just something we have to accept in the digital world. This negative can be easily remedied by choosing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/social-news-twitter-algorithm-update\/\">block the spammer<\/a> and they will not be able to send you messages again until you choose to unblock them.<\/p>\n<p>While we are talking about Twitter Direct Messaging, let me share the news about another change they made earlier in the year that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/how-to-optimize-twitter\/\">definitely benefit you as a brand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Who Can\u00a0Send Who\u00a0A Direct Message<\/h3>\n<p>In the past, you could only direct message people that followed you back.\u00a0For example, if you follow Lindsey Lohan, but she didn&#8217;t\u00a0follow you back, then you could not send her a direct message, but she could still send you a\u00a0direct message because you follow her.<\/p>\n<p>With the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/official\/en_us\/a\/2015\/easier-than-ever-to-have-private-conversations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">change Twitter made earlier this\u00a0year<\/a>, you can send Lindsey Lohan, or anyone else that has a Twitter account a direct message, even if you don\u2019t follow them and they don\u2019t follow you. The Twitter account you want to direct message\u00a0would have to check &#8220;Receive Direct Messages from anyone&#8221; in settings to enable the feature. See example below:<\/p>\n<div id=\"&quot;img_override\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Twitter-Direct-Messages.png\" alt=\"Twitter Direct Messages\" width=\"700\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Twitter-Direct-Messages.png 835w, https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Twitter-Direct-Messages-300x76.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Benefits of This Change<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter is a great tool to promote your brand, listen to your customers and help them with any customer service.<\/li>\n<li>Enabling this feature will make it easier for customers to reach you and perhaps they will direct message you\u00a0before shouting out their complaints on Twitter for everyone to read.<\/li>\n<li>If you are a brand and you want to reach out to all of your new clients and thank them, you don\u2019t have to wait for the long \u201cfollowing game\u201d to be able to message them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spammers. Spammers and spammers. As the only con stated for the first DM change, I also think is the only con for the second change. Being able to message anyone in the Twitter world can become dangerous because of the amount of spammers that are out there. No one wants to be bothered by annoying emails, or sales pitches on their personal Twitter account. Don\u2019t be the brand or business that gets blocked because you are \u201cattempting\u201d to promote your business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you come along a spam situation and you don\u2019t want to receive messages from a specific Twitter account, just follow the steps below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Locate the\u00a0spam message<\/li>\n<li>Click the \u201c<strong>more icon<\/strong>\u201d (\u2022\u2022\u2022) and select \u201c<strong>Flag as spam<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>Mark as abusive<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you click to confirm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, I rest my case. I love\u00a0Twitter and networking. I am not looking forward to more spam, but I am looking forward to the longer and richer direct messaging experience now available to me. What about you?
