While we\u2019ve only just connected, I know that by inviting you to meet up tomorrow and sending you new messages every single week \u2013 even though my product offering is not something you will ever need\u00a0\u2013\u00a0we\u2019re going to have a terrific, mutually beneficial relationship! So&#8230; what\u2019s a good time for you tomorrow?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2014Not a Real Person<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While that\u2019s (thankfully) a fictional message I just made up, I\u2019m sure that you\u2019ve seen snippets of that kind of communication in your LinkedIn inbox.<\/p>\n<h2>LinkedIn Messaging Affects Brand Identity<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, nobody sits down and wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/key-writing-online-content\/\">write a message<\/a> that will annoy or anger the recipient \u2013\u00a0at least not in the digital marketing world!<\/p>\n<p>But it happens\u00a0\u2013 thousands of times a day\u00a0\u2013 on every single social media channel.<\/p>\n<p>And on LinkedIn, it\u2019s 10 times worse. Because the person you\u2019re writing to is, usually, some kind of colleague, vendor or supplier, or a respected figure in your industry.<\/p>\n<h3>The 7 Deadly Sins of LinkedIn Messaging<\/h3>\n<p>The truth is that the way you get your message out reflects back on your brand identity. So the next time you\u2019re writing a LinkedIn message, beware these Seven Deadly Sins:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">1. Not knowing me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you tell me you\u2019re looking for a senior marketing executive position, you didn\u2019t read my profile.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re offering me products\/services that I have absolutely no use for, you didn\u2019t read my profile.<br \/>\nIf you offer me services <em>that I offer<\/em>, you didn\u2019t read my profile.<\/p>\n<p>Please\u00a0\u2013\u00a0if you really think I\u2019m a prospective customer, take 20 seconds to skim my profile and make sure of it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">2. Using an obviously generic, copy-and-paste message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You know what I\u2019m talking about \u2013\u00a0I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve gotten (or even sent) a few of these messages yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Fact: I\u2019m guilty of this sin on occasion. However, I will then take the time to customize it somehow to include the person\u2019s name and\/or company name.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">3. Being pushy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sending frequent <a href=\"https:\/\/cheekyscientist.com\/linkedin-messages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Linkedin messages can get annoying fast<\/a>. If we\u2019ve connected on LinkedIn, I\u2019ve invited you into my LinkedIn stream and even (when it\u2019s relevant) into my email inbox.<\/p>\n<p>But it can feel intrusive if you\u2019re popping up in my inbox every week \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s like Kramer sliding through Jerry\u2019s front door all the time. Kramer can be a fun guy, but the shtick can lose its luster.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">4.\u00a0Being REALLY pushy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I can see asking for a call to get acquainted, but an immediate request for an in-person meeting? Or the slightly \u201cless forward\u201d message asking <em>\u201care you available today for a quick chat?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nSlow down, pal. You may be one of those Always Be Closing kind of people, but not everybody can (or wants to) start shaking hands and making deals an hour after connecting on social media.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">5. Being too vague.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the other end of the spectrum, there are those LinkedIn messages that aren\u2019t specific enough. Just sending a <em>\u201cHey there! How are you today?\u201d<\/em>message is an invitation to a much-longer conversation that not everybody has the time for.<\/p>\n<p>Please save us both time \u2013\u00a0be direct and get to the point. You sell software that\u2019s affordable and does a super-smart quality analysis of my content? I\u2019m intrigued.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">6.\u00a0Using LinkedIn like it\u2019s Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Confession: I don\u2019t like having birthday announcements on LinkedIn. And just like the real office, I avoid talking politics, religion, and most other topics that can start controversy or offend people.<\/p>\n<p>IMO, we\u2019re on LinkedIn to network and to learn from each other. Maybe some folks join to make friends, but there are plenty of other social media channels for that.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">7. Not using spellcheck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Typos happen. But really badly written messages with tons of typos and grammatical errors do not help represent you as a competent professional.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a lot of people will see you as someone to avoid \u2013\u00a0because if you\u2019re making these kinds of mistakes on simple email messages and not doing a thorough proofreading, they\u2019ll think that your lack of attention to detail could mean your products\/services are not top-quality either.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Gordon Ramsay is Right<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is often guilty of one of the Original Seven Deadly Sins (Wrath\/Anger), he\u2019s right about compliments vs. criticism.<\/p>\n<p>Chef Ramsay always says <em>(not quoting verbatim) <\/em>that we don\u2019t learn anything from compliments \u2013\u00a0other than we\u2019re doing a good job. We learn much more from constructive criticism. It helps us grow and improve and do better.<\/p>\n<h2>Use LinkedIn Messaging with Care<\/h2>\n<p>LinkedIn and LinkedIn messaging is an integral part of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/helpful-linkedin-tips\/\">brand\u2019s online footprint<\/a>, so use it with care. Let this constructive criticism keep you on track. And if you\u2019ve committed some of these sins in the past, let\u2019s wipe the slate clean starting now.
