Why? Well, I\u2019m an old man. I took Pascal in high school. (Go ahead and Google it, I\u2019ll wait.)<\/p>\n<p>I typed my college papers on a typewriter\/word processor hybrid. I hung out in MUDs and MOOs before there were chat rooms. And I\u2019m lucky enough to have lived my bachelor days before the onslaught of social media.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that has stood the test of time \u2013 unlike my hairline \u2013 is Integrated Marketing Communications. But while IMC (that\u2019s what us <em>industry insiders<\/em> call it \u2013 clever, huh?) is still an important concept for marketers, it\u2019s had to change as our communications technology landscape has changed.<\/p>\n<h2>So, What is Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC)?<\/h2>\n<p>Before we can talk about what it is today, let\u2019s take a moment to talk about what it <em>used <\/em>to be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mmclearning.com\/knowledge\/what-is-marketing-communications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrated Marketing Communications<\/a> is pretty much exactly what it sounds like \u2013 the combination of many different forms of communication for marketing purposes. The idea is to create a focused, on-brand marketing campaign that uses every communication tool possible to market a company\u2019s products\/services.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Hats by Harley (\u2122 pending) might be introducing a new line of ultra-lightweight, breathable baseball caps that filter out UV rays. (This is especially helpful for bald\/balding men.)<\/p>\n<p>A couple decades ago, HbH would create an Integrated Marketing Communications plan for this new product line \u2013 with our \u201cConquer the Sun\u201d theme (\u2122 pending) \u2013 including all of the old-school channels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Broadcast = TV and radio spots with media buys during pro sports broadcasts<\/li>\n<li>Print = Ads in the newspaper sports and business sections; also in sports magazines<\/li>\n<li>Direct mail = Postcards with 10% discount offers sent to purchased lists of men 21\u201365<\/li>\n<li>Collateral = Brochures\/handouts with 10% discount offers for sporting goods stores<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor = Billboards in high-traffic areas along major commute roadways<\/li>\n<li>Public relations = Press releases sent to trade publications, newspaper business editors<\/li>\n<li>Events = In-store appearances by bald\/balding pro athletes (current and former)<\/li>\n<li>Point of Purchase = 10% discount offers given to purchasers to share with friends<\/li>\n<li>Sweepstakes = Entries given to purchasers, winner gets trip to major sporting event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But that was then, and this is now.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more info on these marketing classics in my previous piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/old-school-marketing-tactics-today\/\">using old-school marketing tactics today<\/a>, but for right now&#8230; <em>Hello, Interwebs!<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Integrated Marketing Communications and the Rise of the Internet<\/h3>\n<p>A funny thing happened over the past couple decades \u2013 the Internet. Digital marketing is arguably more powerful, more personal, and more cost-effective than most forms of traditional marketing.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Today\u2019s IMC Plan<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s use Hats by Harley\u2019s new product line as an example. The IMC plan would likely include all of the above, but also require the \u201cnew school\u201d online marketing tools list below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Websites =\u00a0Add an entire section dedicated to the new product line onto the HbH website, and make sure it\u2019s fully integrated\/linked throughout and shareable<\/li>\n<li>Email =\u00a0Send multi-tiered email campaign to HbH subscriber list with discount offers<\/li>\n<li>Search Engine Marketing (SEM) \/ Search Engine Optimization (SEO) =\u00a0Maximize online presence by incorporating product line name <em>everywhere<\/em>, and promoting hashtags like\u00a0#conquerthesun,\u00a0#basebald and\u00a0#protectyourdome.<\/li>\n<li>Blogs =\u00a0Add blog posts to HbH site, offer to write guest posts for online influencers\u2019 sites<\/li>\n<li>Banner Ads =\u00a0Buy space on major sports news sites, team sites, fan sites, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But wait \u2013 there\u2019s #more.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Like, Share, Follow and Retweet<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then there was Facebook. And Twitter. And a few million others.<\/p>\n<p>But for sheer \u201creach\u201d numbers, Facebook and Twitter are probably the two you\u2019d want to focus on for this particular product line. (Sure, you can promote baseball caps on LinkedIn, but that\u2019s not really the best channel for it.)<\/p>\n<p>The cool thing is that you can take a lot of your already-created marketing materials (print ad concepts, billboards, etc.) and adapt them for use on social media \u2013 taking into account the advertising rules for each channel. Cross-posting blogs and press releases is also an easy and cost-effective way to promote your product.<\/p>\n<p>You might even consider creating unique accounts on Facebook and Twitter for the product line. But if you do, make sure you monitor them and have skilled specialists working to engage interested people.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Make Mine Mobile<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s not forget the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/blog\/18-local-mobile-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all-important world of mobile marketing<\/a>. More and more people are turning off their desktops and laptops in favor of their smartphones and tablets.<\/p>\n<p>So you\u2019d better make sure that your websites and emails use responsive design \u2013 which ensures that all your creative team\u2019s hard work is readable and easy-to-navigate for users.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, mobile advertising is also an essential tool in reaching today\u2019s audience. If everyone is using mobile devices, then that\u2019s where you need to buy ad space.<\/p>\n<h2>Integrated Marketing Communications Literally Puts it all Together for Businesses<\/h2>\n<p>Clearly today\u2019s version of Integrated Marketing Communications has a lot more to, um, integrate. That\u2019s why today\u2019s marketers (like you, Dear Reader) have to be multi-talented, multi-skilled, and conversant in all forms of communication. Or at least able to hire people who are!<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line: For IMC to work successfully, the messaging at its core needs to be both consistent and memorable. So when you\u2019re taking that message and executing it through all of these media and channels, you\u2019re creating an impactful campaign that will generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/aida-website-content\/\">attention, interest, desire and action<\/a>.
