In this post, I will focus on the \u201cWHEN\u201d as it relates to digital marketing. My inspiration for this post was the fact that it\u2019s summertime when so many companies decrease or even stop their marketing efforts \u2013\u00a0which, by the way, has been proven to be a bad mistake.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s take a look at the importance of \u201cwhen\u201d \u2013 whether it\u2019s the time of year, month, week, or even time of day \u2013 and see why \u201ctiming is everything\u201d in digital marketing, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Timing is Everything in Digital Marketing<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">TIME OF YEAR<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of \u201crules\u201d about marketing that people follow, sometimes a bit too blindly. For example, the old chestnut about cutting back on marketing activities during summer vacation and the November\/December holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>But now that our smartphones go everywhere we do \u2013 even to Grandma\u2019s house during Christmas \u2013 your target audience can almost always be reached. And they may even be willing to check out digital marketing messages during those times (especially during Grandma\u2019s vacation slideshow from Branson, MO).<\/p>\n<h3>Digital Marketing Q1: January through March<\/h3>\n<p>In the first quarter of the year, you\u2019re (hopefully) executing things that you planned in Q4 of the previous year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/blog\/small-business-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Target audiences<\/a> may be dealing with the post-holiday blues or financial struggles due to excessive gift-giving, or just plain \u201cback to work\u201d malaise.<\/p>\n<p>But each of those scenarios provides you with an opportunity to hit them with all the right early-year messages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Customer acquisition: <\/strong>Kick off the new year with a bang! It\u2019s time to try something new!<\/li>\n<li><strong>New product\/service: <\/strong>New year, new you!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Savings offer: <\/strong>It\u2019s a long year ahead, let\u2019s make sure you stay within your budget!<\/li>\n<li>And of course, the ever-popular New Year\u2019s resolutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Digital Marketing Q2: April through June<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By springtime, your marketing activities should really be in full swing. In fact, those kinds of messages dovetail nicely with the weather and outdoorsiness of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Snow is melting, temperatures are rising, and flowers are blooming. It may seem like the world is being reborn and refreshed, so those are some good messages to try:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Customer acquisition: <\/strong>It\u2019s springtime \u2013 let\u2019s rejuvenate your business!<\/li>\n<li><strong>New product\/service: <\/strong>Spring into spring!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Savings offer: <\/strong>Savings are in bloom!<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s also a great time to refresh your website or even your brand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Digital Marketing Q3: July through September<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The dreaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/social-media-vacation\/\">summer vacation months<\/a>. It\u2019s the time when \u2013 traditionally \u2013 marketers slow down or even stop communicating with their customers and prospects.<\/p>\n<p>MISTAKE! Of course, there are plenty of messages you could be (and should be) sending out, whether they\u2019re summer-related or post-vacation, back-to-school related:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Customer acquisition: <\/strong>Head back to school\/work with confidence!<\/li>\n<li><strong>New product\/service: <\/strong>We\u2019re setting off fireworks with our latest offering!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Savings offer: <\/strong>These hot deals are sizzling with savings! (Sorry about that one.)<\/li>\n<li>Total honesty can work during this time, too: \u201cYou might be sipping your favorite adult beverage on the beach right now. So why are you reading this? Because you\u2019re good at what you do and you care about your company\u2019s success.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Digital Marketing Q4: October through December<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Days getting shorter. Temps getting colder. And lots of holiday planning, cooking and shopping to do. Who has time to think about work?<\/p>\n<p>Better be you! You want to finish the year strong, tally up how well you\u2019ve done, and do your planning for next year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Customer acquisition: <\/strong>Finish the year strong \u2013 and start next year even stronger!<\/li>\n<li><strong>New product\/service: <\/strong>Here\u2019s a gift from us to you!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Savings offer: <\/strong>Last chance to save this year! Holiday pricing!<\/li>\n<li>Plenty of holiday themes to go with, from giving thanks to family love.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">TIME OF MONTH<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking on a monthly basis, think like a car salesman. You want a strong first week to build momentum so you don\u2019t have to stress about meeting your quotas in the last week.<\/p>\n<p>This is where plenty of research and knowledge about your customers and prospects is key.<\/p>\n<p>Always be aware of your target audience\u2019s monthly schedule. Do they typically do their spending early, middle or late in the month? Or is it a constant thing for them?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">TIME OF WEEK<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This particular issue is probably one of the easiest to analyze because most working folks are in the same boat. So, think about how receptive <em>you<\/em> would be to marketing messages on these days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monday = Don\u2019t bother me, I\u2019m recuperating from the weekend and wishing it was longer.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday = OK, buckling down to start really getting stuff done.<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday = Hump day! Still working hard, but now there\u2019s light at the end of the tunnel.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday = Still going strong. Even thinking about a celebratory drink or two this evening.<\/li>\n<li>Friday = Counting the minutes! Weekend weekend weekend!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s why many studies show that those three middle days are probably the best options for sending out marketing messages. But again, with so many of today\u2019s working people online 24\/7, chances are good you\u2019ll catch them paying attention every single day.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">TIME OF DAY<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t use yourself as the example in this scenario, because you might be a morning person or an afternoon person or a night owl \u2013 but your target audience is likely a mix of all of these.<\/p>\n<p>The kind of message you send can be tailored to the time of day, and that\u2019s a worthwhile path to go down. However, remember that not everybody views your messages immediately. For example, lots of folks \u201ctriage\u201d their email inbox \u2013 scanning through, reading the most urgent or intriguing emails, and \u201csaving the others for later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of that behavior, make sure you stand out from the crowd!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Digital Marketing Leads the Way!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/blog\/mobile-app-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the digital world gets more trackable <\/a>and data-driven, digital marketing is leading the way. The timing of your digital marketing efforts can be an important factor, so give it some thought when you can.
