Going by his logic, we have two eyes so that we can look around twice as much as we speak, too. This brings me to the main point of this post \u2013 which is not just counting the various parts of our head.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Shake Up Your Marketing Strategy<\/h2>\n<h3>Open Your Eyes and Listen Up &#8211; Finding a New Marketing Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>While you can argue that they\u2019re the same thing \u00ad\u2013 paying attention \u00ad\u2013 I\u2019ll be more specific. Based on that core idea, here are the three ways I\u2019m shaking things up when it comes to expanding my professional mind in 2017:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">\u201cFollowing\u201d More People Outside Marketing<\/span><br \/>\nOur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kimberlywhitler\/2017\/01\/13\/the-top-influencers-of-tech-b2b-cmos-in-2016\/?sh=48703ebb5fe5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">influencers<\/a> don\u2019t only have to be leaders in the marketing world. We can learn a lot from \u201coutsiders\u201d who are leaders in their own industries. If they\u2019re writing or speaking about important issues and sharing their unique insights and perspectives, we can usually find a lesson or two in there for our own profession.<\/p>\n<p><em>PRO TIP: LinkedIn does a good job of enabling this\u00a0since you can \u201cfollow\u201d people like Barbara Corcoran or Richard Branson or Sergey Brin or Warren Buffett with the click of a button. For bite-sized bits of wisdom, follow them on Twitter as well.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span class=\"callout\">Visiting New (To Me) Marketing, Advertising, and Other Communications-Focused Websites\/Blogs<br \/>\n<\/span>Similar to #1, but different in that we\u2019re back to focusing on marketing. There are plenty of voices out there in Marketing Land with distinctive opinions, and we could spend all day searching and reading up on them.<\/p>\n<p>I plan to seek out influencers who focus on specific areas within marketing (experiential, mobile, etc.), or new and innovative concepts that are creating new marketing vehicles (wearables, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/technology-data\/how-brands-can-tap-internet-things-maximize-opportunities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internet of Things<\/a>, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>And I want to go beyond typical marketing stuff and check out other types of communication, even if they\u2019re only tangentially related. Maybe I\u2019ll read a book of poems and notice the interplay of the words \u2013 it could help with my own writing. Or I could study up on nonverbal communication \u2013 and learn a thing or two about how I present myself\u00a0or get some tips for shooting a client video.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Relying on Time-Tested Tactics, But Mixing In Some New\/Different Ones<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span>I\u2019m old enough to remember tissue-paper mechanicals and physical \u201cjob jacket\u201d folders, but I like to think I\u2019m pretty plugged into how things work in today\u2019s marketing world. So while I usually advise my clients to pursue many of today\u2019s fundamental marketing tactics \u2013 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/email-subscribers\/\">email<\/a> to social to collateral materials \u2013 I\u2019m going to see how we can expand our planning to include a few unconventional tactics.<\/p>\n<p>If that means suggesting a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/old-school-marketing-tactics-today\/\">old-school printed flyers<\/a> for an innovative tech startup\u00a0or recommending a social media campaign for a B2B manufacturer of ball bearings, then let\u2019s give it a shot.
