In my previous blog<\/a>, I promised that my next post would talk about ways to build your business social media network. BOOM – Posted!<\/p>\n

(If you get the reference to \u201cThe Office,\u201d we can hang.)<\/p>\n

Before we get started, please note that I\u2019ll be mostly focusing on \u201cthe basics\u201d when it comes to social media \u2014 and for me, that\u2019s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. There are many cooler\/hipper\/younger writers who can speak to growing your network on Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat and all the other social sites the kids are into nowadays.<\/p>\n

But we\u2019re talking business here. And while I\u2019m sure there are dozens of ways to use those channels for marketing, I\u2019d be willing to bet that the Big Three are still the most popular and effective ones (at least for now).<\/p>\n

One thing to remember above all: These are your BUSINESS accounts. They\u2019re all about creating awareness of your company, which hopefully leads to engagement \u2014 where it\u2019s up to you to turn those leads into customers.<\/p>\n

If you want to share opinions on issues, news and stuff, I recommend saving that for your personal account. After all, your biggest customer or prospect could have the exact opposite view on an issue as you. Keeping your business dealings separate from all that stuff is usually the best way to go.<\/p>\n

Business Social Media Network Growth Tactics<\/h2>\n

Without further ado, here are my four tips for building your business social media network<\/a>:<\/p>\n

1. Make sure your account profile\/bio\/information is complete and accurate.<\/span>
\nNobody will click \u201cLike\u201d or \u201cFollow\u201d or \u201cConnect\u201d unless you\u2019re real, you\u2019re open\/honest\/informative, and you give them a good reason or two. And if you\u2019re able to pique their interest, you\u2019d better have their favorite means of communication prominently featured in your \u201cContact us\u201d info. Have your phone and fax numbers (yeah, some people still use \u2019em), email, website, and even your other social media accounts available.<\/p>\n

Also, describe your company and whatever you sell \u2014 products, services, etc. \u2014 clearly and succinctly. Give them the elevator pitch, the ten-words-or-less story, and the main reasons to choose you and your business.<\/p>\n

Because when people get to know you and can reach out to connect with you, that\u2019s how you start building a social media network.<\/p>\n

2. Make the first move. (But be choosy.)<\/span>
\nEverybody goes through the same things when they discover social media (regardless of the channel). We\u2019re fascinated with it, and how easy it is to make connections and learn about people and places and things. We log in frequently \u2014 or stay logged in all the time \u2014 with a fresh case of FOMO. (That\u2019s \u201cFear Of Missing Out.\u201d And for some of us, that never really goes away!)<\/p>\n

So we start connecting with people<\/a>. Family, friends, neighbors, former colleagues, etc. We ask them to be our Friends, we follow their Twitter accounts, we connect on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n

Pro Tip: If you really want someone to accept your LinkedIn invite<\/a>, don\u2019t just hit \u201cInvite.\u201d Write them a personalized message saying why you\u2019d like to connect, as well as their WIFM (\u201cWhat\u2019s in It For Me\u201d \u2014 one of my favorite acronyms).<\/p>\n

Again, this is your BUSINESS social media network we\u2019re talking about. So when I say \u201cmake the first move,\u201d remember who it is you want to connect with for your business:<\/p>\n

* Friends \u2014 who are (or should be) fans of your business
\n* Colleagues\/partners \u2014 who support your business, and you\u2019ll support in return
\n* Customers \u2014 who are the heart of your business and need constant attention
\n* Prospects \u2014 who will (hopefully) appreciate you reaching out to them<\/p>\n

So go and get \u2019em, but know that social media isn\u2019t really a numbers game. Sure, it\u2019s great to say \u201cwe have thousands of followers.\u201d However, if 20% of them are spambots and scammers, and 15% are people who will never be your customers, they\u2019re like a sixth toe on your left foot \u2014 kinda cool, but not super-necessary.<\/p>\n

3. Plan to post relevant things on a regular basis.<\/span>
\nSocial posts are a big blank canvas \u2014 which can be dangerous (or at the very least, ineffective) if you don\u2019t have a plan. Thankfully, putting together a plan that keeps people interested in you \u2014 and attracts more of them \u2014 just needs a little thinkin\u2019.<\/p>\n

Think about how frequently you want to post, but also the reality of sitting down to actually create and post them. Three posts a week might be ambitious for some, but once a month is probably too infrequent. What works for you?<\/p>\n

Think about what your friends\/followers\/connections want to see from you. Sales promotions? Exclusive discount offers? Product demos? Relevant news about your company? Put yourself in their virtual shoes and think it over.<\/p>\n

Think about having someone on staff (or a freelancer) handle it for you. (Unethical Plug: That\u2019s where someone like me can help.) They can strategize with you and put together a plan, then create the posts for you and \u2014 once approved \u2014 even post them for you if you like.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to be \u201ctop of mind\u201d at all times, but as long as you pop up in timelines on a regular basis, you should be OK.<\/p>\n

4. Keep it professional.<\/span>
\nI can\u2019t stress this enough. It\u2019s your BUSINESS social media network. (All caps means super-serious, you guys.)<\/p>\n

When you get \u201cengagement\u201d \u2014 that\u2019s a fancy marketing term for messages and feedback \u2014 that\u2019s a tremendous opportunity for you.<\/p>\n

Customer service question? Answer quickly, politely and thoroughly. Facebook even tracks your responses and response time for you.<\/p>\n

Positive feedback? Thank them for the message quickly. You could even write them privately and offer them a discount.<\/p>\n

Negative feedback? Thank them for calling the issue to your attention quickly, and offer them a solution and how you\u2019ll fix the problem.<\/p>\n

Pro Tip: Get them OFFLINE as soon as possible, because angry complaints have a way of going viral \u2014 or at least tainting your company\u2019s good name online for a long time. So get their contact info or give them yours, and have a nice chat offline.<\/p>\n

And remember, don\u2019t post stuff that might be controversial. That\u2019s not what you\u2019re trying to do with your business account, and it will hurt your efforts to create positive awareness and cultivate leads.<\/p>\n
