{"id":10805,"date":"2016-06-29T12:33:09","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T17:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/?p=10805"},"modified":"2024-11-22T11:17:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T17:17:34","slug":"speaking-small-rooms-confidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/speaking-small-rooms-confidence\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaking in Small Rooms With Confidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We started off today with Brian Sullivan who clarified for us right off the bat that a conference (like Rocks Digital) isn\u2019t a \u201csmall room\u201d, an Executive Board meeting is a small room.<\/p>\n<p>Brian founded 2 conferences \u2013Big Design USA and Big Design Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>Why does the strategy change in small rooms?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just about learning and laughing in a small room &#8211; in a small room the stakes are high &#8211; opinions vary and making personal connections is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Key to Small Room Strategy = Planning \u2013 Presentation \u2013 Delivery<\/p>\n<h2>Preparation Determines Success<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a right <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>altitude<\/em><\/span> for executives<\/li>\n<li>Provide your punchlines first<\/li>\n<li>Plan for interruptions &amp; questions<\/li>\n<li>Plan to practice, practice, practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, say you&#8217;re planning an hour-long talk &#8211; how much prep time should you plan on?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Researching multiply by 2 &#8211; so, for an hour talk, plan on 2 hours of research (at least)<\/li>\n<li>Building slides multiply by 2 -another 2 hours<\/li>\n<li>Practicing multiply by 2 &#8211; two more hours<\/li>\n<li>Updating slides multiply by 1 &#8211; at least an hour doing this<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Pre-talk&#8221; talks multiply by 2 &#8211; another 2 hours prep time<\/li>\n<li>Back Channel (after the meeting) multiply by 2-3 a &#8220;final&#8221; -3 hours of prep time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, for an hour long talk, you are probably looking at AT LEAST 10-12 hours of prep time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alignment &amp; support is needed \u2013 helps you anticipate questions<\/li>\n<li>Be in control\u00a0 &#8211; the conversation that you want to have is the question that you should ask<\/li>\n<li>Practice<\/li>\n<li>Do less better, use fewer slides<\/li>\n<li>Know the language of leadership<\/li>\n<li>Focus on business goals<\/li>\n<li>Tell stories with available data<\/li>\n<li>Structure with a future tense<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conversation Types<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal connection<\/li>\n<li>Friendly conversation<\/li>\n<li>Problem investigation<\/li>\n<li>Possible solution<\/li>\n<li>Political discussion<\/li>\n<li>Personal motives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The goal of a C-level meeting is to get the executive to expose their internal dialogue to you.<\/p>\n<h2>Three keys to success<\/h2>\n<p>Remember &#8211; Bosses have bosses, too!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communicate business goals<\/li>\n<li>Communicate in terms of risk<\/li>\n<li>Envision a future state<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A small room can be terrifying and nervous people will:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk too much<\/li>\n<li>Forget to speak<\/li>\n<li>Repeat, Repeat, Repeat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Executives try to find weakness in the ARGUMENT, not necessarily the presenter &#8211; so if an executive challenges you, stop and ask yourself\u00a0 &#8211; is it personal or is it personality?<\/p>\n<h2>Executives have fears, too<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Fear of failure<\/li>\n<li>Loss of reputation<\/li>\n<li>Lawsuits<\/li>\n<li>Competitors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They want YOU to alleviate the fears.
