Just when you think you\u2019ve aced it and have complete understanding, something changes\u2026 again. However, one basic component has remained steady over time, and that\u2019s relevancy.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a word you\u2019ve also heard repeatedly when discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/the-low-tech-guide-to-seo\/\">search engine optimization (SEO<\/a>). But the question remains, <em>\u201cIs your site relevant and ready for the keyword phrases being searched by your prospects?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This post isn\u2019t a how-to for achieving page-one Google placement. There\u2019s no magic trick to doing that, although some folks out there may lead you to believe otherwise. But there are some basics for keyword placement that are still vital for ensuring your website is considered relevant.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Captivating Content Captures Searchers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When a client or prospect contacts me asking about their search results, I first ask them what keyword phrase or phrases they\u2019re targeting. Then, I look at their page content and I am often surprised, when I quickly discover the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksdigital.com\/5-creative-keyword-research-ideas\/\">keyword phrases<\/a> they mentioned are nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n<p>Captivating, helpful content is what drives most searchers to return to their favorite sites. So make sure your site is optimized with the targeted phrases you think customers and prospects are using to find businesses similar to yours.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of four strategic Web page locations to place keyword phrases:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">1. Within the actual content of individual pages<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Start with quality content \u2013 valuable information, related to the matter at hand. The first and last paragraphs are especially good places to consider. While it\u2019s a good idea to use keyword phrases throughout, don\u2019t drown your content with them. A high keyword density is considered \u201ckeyword stuffing\u201d by search engines, and that can hurt, rather than help you.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">2. The Web page title<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is not the same as a headline. Whether you\u2019re using Firefox or Chrome, <em>(does anyone use Internet Explorer anymore?)<\/em> you\u2019ll find the title in the top bar of the browser when your page appears. It\u2019s programmed in your HTML code as the TITLE meta tag.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">3. Page headlines and headers<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just like a hardcopy brochure has headlines and subheadings, so does your Web page. Make good use of these and insert keyword phrases, when appropriate. Be sure your headlines are formatted with an H1 tag in the HTML, because that\u2019s what the search engines read.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">4. Page meta descriptions<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The meta title and description are what show up when you look at a page of search results. Your description should encourage a prospect to click through because it offers the relevant information they\u2019re seeking.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"callout\">Different Pages \u2013 Different Keywords<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, different pages of your site will be optimized for different keyword phrases. Therefore, don\u2019t use the same page titles and descriptions on every page. Take advantage of the opportunity to create unique page titles and descriptions for each one.<\/p>\n<p>Titles such as \u201cABC Company \u2013 About Us\u201d and \u201cABC Company \u2013 Our Services\u201d don\u2019t offer any relevancy, unless \u201cABC Company\u201d is a widely known brand and your prospects search for you specifically by your company name.<\/p>\n<p>Check out SEOCentro\u2019s Meta Tag Analyzer. Make sure your content delivers what they\u2019re searching for.
